Full Box Score

The Monarchs lost 3-1 to Licking County today, ending their playoff hopes and capping a disappointing finish to their Great Lakes season.

After sweeping a doubleheader following the All-Star break, the Monarchs hit a rut by finishing 2-9.

Licking County got things started in the first inning with an RBI double by Tyler Wynn. The Monarchs answered back in the second inning on a bloop RBI double by Chris Savas (Central Michigan) down the right field line. Lake Erie, however, stranded runners on second and third in the inning.

Licking County added a single run in the fourth and fifth innings. The first run was unearned due to a fielding error by Ryan Ford (Middle Tennessee State), and the second run came on an RBI single by Jordan Sivertsen.

The problem for Lake Erie today was a lack of key hits. They got plenty of hits - nine - but only scored one run. Nine runners were stranded on base, and they stranded at least one runner on base in all but two innings.

Jack Scanlon (Western Michigan, 2-3 with a run and a walk), Savas (2-3 with a walk and an RBI), and  Seth Willoughby (Xavier, 2-4) led the way offensively for Lake Erie. Willoughby added a stolen base while Scanlon was caught stealing once.

Alex Radon (Toledo) started and pitched well in his three innings. His line included two hits, one walk, one run and three strikeouts. Joey McClung (Middle Tennessee State) took the loss (1-3) in relief as he allowed one hit, three walks, and two runs (one earned) in two innings.

Mike Moyer (Western Michigan), Logan Brunkenhoefer (Oklahoma State), and Dylan Vogt (Nebraska) combined to pitch a scoreless final four innings. They collaborated in allowing only two hits while striking out two.

Jake Naumann (3-2) got the win in relief for the Settlers.

The Monarchs finish the season 18-23-1 (17-22-1 in the Great Lakes League). Licking County improved their league best record to 28-10.

Notes: Lake Erie's 17 league wins was a five game improvement over last year's 12-24 league record. The Monarchs will now move on to the All American Amateur Baseball Association (AAABA) World Series. The team qualified by being the only age 20 and under team in the Great Lakes League.

Settlers dominate Monarchs behind Walker
Written by Nicholas Huenefeld

7/30/10 Adrian, MI---
Full Box Score

Adam Walker hit a two run home run to dead center off of Monarchs starter Eric Vaughan (Owens C.C.) in the first inning. Walker and the Settlers didn't look back after that in winning 8-3.

The top team in the Great Lakes League clinched an outright regular season league title tonight at Nicolay Field, as the Monarchs need to win tomorrow and hope Cincinnati loses their final three games to make the playoffs.

Walker finished the game 4-4 with three runs and two RBIs. He walked and stole second base in his final plate appearance. He is now tied for the league lead in home runs after his home run today, which was his eighth of the season.

Meanwhile, Vaughan struggled for the second straight time. He went 2.1 innings and allowed 10 hits and seven earned runs. Licking County's 2-5 hitters were mainly responsible for that damage - Walker hit in the three hole.

Combined, those hitters went 8-8 with four singles, two doubles, one triple, and one home run during Vaughan's outing. They collected six of the seven RBIs Vaughan gave up, as well.

Josh Cok (Central Michigan) relieved Vaughan and pitched well. He finished with 2.2 innings pitched while giving up one hit and two walks. He also struck out three.

Tom Polus (Georgetown) pitched three innings following Cok and also had a good outing. He allowed only three hits and struck out two while giving up one unearned run.

Tyler Scott (Toledo) began the ninth inning, but left after two outs due to an undisclosed injury. Seth Willoughby (Xavier) entered from his DH spot to retire the final batter.

Offensively, the Monarchs scored their first run in the sixth inning when Jack Scanlon (Western Michigan) hit an RBI double to left center scoring Willoughby, who had singled to lead off the inning. Scanlon was tagged out on the play when he overslide second base and was tagged out by the second baseman.

The Monarchs added two more runs in the eighth. Alex Johnson (Cleveland State), Ryan Ford (Middle Tennessee State) and Willoughby each walked to lead off the inning. Daniel Russell (Eastern Michigan) then hit a ball to the second baseman, who threw to short to retire Willoughby, but the throw to first was wild. Johnson and Ford scored on the play to cut the Licking County lead to five.

Johnson made two outstanding catches from his centerfield spot against the Settlers - one in right center and the other in left center.

Scanlon was the only Monarch with two hits as Johnson, Ford, Willoughby, and Reid Rooney (Central Michigan) picked up the other hits for Lake Erie.

The loss drops Lake Erie to 18-22-1 overall and 17-21-1 in the Great Lakes League. Licking County moves to 27-10 in the Great Lakes League.

Lake Erie will now take on Licking County at home tomorrow at 1 p.m. It will be the final regular season game for the Monarchs.

Notes: If Lake Erie wins tomorrow, they will finish 18-21-1 in the Great Lakes League. Cincinnati is currently 16-17 with three games remaining. If Cincinnati loses those three games, the Monarchs would be three games under .500 compared to four games under for Cincinnati. More information on the playoff possibilities will come tomorrow if the Monarchs win their game.
