Lake Erie wins season opener in walk off fashion

In the first game of a doubleheader, fans saw a spectacular defensive show from both teams while the Monarchs prevailed 3-2 in eight innings. 
 
Seth Willoughby (1-0) got the win in relief, while Chase Greene (0-1) took the loss. Willoughby went the final three innings and didn’t allow any hits or walks and struck out five in 37 pitches.
 
Kurt Farmer, Monarchs 3B, went 2-4 with two runs scored, including the game winning run. He also made a diving catch (pictured to the right) along the 3rd base railing in foul territory while falling over the tarp in the 3rd inning.
 
Ryan Ford, Lake Erie shortstop, went 2-3 with an RBI, and Brooks Beilke, catcher, went 1-2 with two RBIs.
 
Patrick Ludwig started the game for the Monarchs. He went five innings, allowing eight hits, walking one, and striking out three. He threw 79 pitches. Tanner Perkins started and went 5.2 innings for the Hustlers, allowing five hits, two earned runs, and striking out three.
 
The Monarchs opened the scoring with two runs in the second inning with an RBI single by Ford and a bases loaded walk by Beilke. Lexington tied it in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI groundout and an RBI single.
 
The Monarchs had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the 7th inning when they loaded the bases with one out. However, Daniel Russell hit a laser to the right of the first baseman, Ken Riley, who laid out, snagged it and tagged the runner on first for a double play to end the inning.
 
The game was won in the last half of the eighth after a bloop single to left center by Farmer to lead off the inning and three straight walks.
 
Lake Erie is now 1-0 on the season, while Lexington falls to 0-1. It was Lexington's first game in franchise history.

Monarchs win second game after lightning

The second game of a doubleheader between the Lake Erie Monarchs and Lexington Hustlers was conceded by the Hustlers after lightning suspended the game with the Monarchs leading 12-0 in the bottom of the 3rd inning.

Lake Erie is now 2-0 on the season, while Lexington falls to 0-2.

The same teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 2 p.m. in Adrian, MI.

 
Monarchs open regular season tonight at Ned Skeldon Stadium

The team just completed their exhibition season undefeated. First, they defeated the Rockford Foresters 9-2 on Wednesday, and then came back and defeated them again the next night 1-0. On Friday, they defeated the Lima Locos 8-5.
