Full Box Score

The Monarchs are in a rut offensively with runners in scoring position. That, combined with giving up two unearned runs, cost them a second straight game tonight while falling 4-3 to the Grand Lake Mariners.

Lake Erie stranded nine runners overall and seven runners in scoring position. They left runners on second and third in the first inning, a runner on second in the second and a runner at third in the fourth.

The big downfalls for the Monarchs were loading the bases with no outs in the sixth and first and third with no outs in the seventh and getting zero runs out of it. In the sixth, Jack Scanlon struck out and Brooks Beilke hit into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. In the seventh, Daniel Russell and Kurt Farmer got caught in a base running mishap and both were tagged out before Bill Charvat flew out to right.

The Mariners scored unearned runs in the third and sixth innings. The first was due to a passed ball, and the second run was due to a double error on one play.

Although the Mariners got on board with two runs in the first, the Monarchs fought back to cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first on a Chris Savas (Central Michigan) RBI groundout. The Mariners upped their lead to 3-1 with their third inning unearned run before the Monarchs tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Seth Willoughby (Xavier) had a two RBI single up the middle that scored Sam Russell and Ryan Ford. Grand Lake then scored their second unearned run in the sixth for the game winning run.

Willoughby was 2-4 with a run and two RBIs on the game and Jack Scanlon went 2-5. The rest of the lineup combined to go 1-21 with two runs scored.

Jared Earle (1-0) got the win for Grand Lake, while Alex Radon (0-1) took the loss for Lake Erie. Earle pitched the final five innings for Grand Lake. He only allowed one hit, walked four and struck out six.

Radon (Toledo) started the game for the Monarchs. He went six innings and allowed seven hits, four runs (two earned), walked four and struck out four. Tyler Scott (Toledo) relieved him and went two innings, walked three, allowed zero runs and struck out two. Eric Vaughan (Owens C.C.) pitched the final inning and allowed one hit while striking out one in a scoreless inning.

The Mariners were heavy in the running game tonight while stealing five bases.

Lake Erie is now 3-2 on the season, while Grand Lake moves to 1-2. The Monarchs will now play the Rockford Foresters at 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday in Rockford, Ill. Those two games are part of road trip that includes eight games in the next nine days.
