Monarchs add two catchers
Written by Nicholas Huenefeld

7/8/10 Adrian, MI---

The Monarchs have added two catchers to their roster recently. Last week, they added Cory Osborne (Mott C.C.) and tonight they added Kyle Bischoff (Purdue) to their roster.

The move will provide the team with added depth at catcher following the injury of Brooks Beilke (Western Michigan) recently.

Osborne is from Monroe, MI and just finished up his sophomore year. He hit .347 with 24 RBIs from the right side of the plate for Mott this past spring. Bischoff, a redshirt freshman, is a switch hitter.

Bischoff will join the team tomorrow night vs Southern Ohio.

7/8/10 Adrian, MI---

Alex Johnson (OF, Cleveland State), Eric Vaughan (SP, Owens C.C.), Dylan Vogt (RP, Nebraska), and Seth Willoughby (P/IF, Xavier) have been selected to appear in the 2010 Great Lakes League All-Star Game.

The game will be held July 14 at Western Hills, H.S. in Cincinnati, OH. It is the home of the Cincinnati Steam.

Willoughby and Johnson are the team's two leading hitters.

Willoughby is hitting .391 on the season. He has scored 12 runs and knocked in 10 so far while slugging .500. In addition, he has 11 walks in helping him to a .517 on base percentage. Willoughby leads the team in stolen bases with seven, and he has only been caught once. He has been the teams best fielder this season with 21 putouts and 23 assists in 44 chances, while not making any errors.

Johnson is hitting .289, but he has been on fire as of late. Last week, he went 8-20 - good for a .400 batting average. He is second on the team behind Willoughby in stolen bases with six, and much like Willoughby, he has only been caught once. His nine doubles are good for second in the league.

Vaughan has been the top pitcher for the Monarchs - possibly the best in the league this season. He is 4-0 in four starts, with one relief appearance mixed in. He has thrown a complete game and a nine inning outing this season. His last three wins have come following a Monarchs loss. Overall, he has a 1.05 ERA and allowed 26 hits, six runs (three earned), nine walks, two doubles, and one triple in 25.2 innings pitched. He also has 17 strikeouts and his 1.05 ERA is third in the league, while his four wins are second in the league.

Vogt is the league leader in saves with six. He has a 1.04 ERA in eight appearances. In 8.2 innings, he has allowed only four hits, one run, three walks, and he has struck out seven. His opponent batting average is .148.

Vaughan and Vogt have been the Great Lakes League pitchers of the week over the last two weeks, respectively.

Monarchs fall back to .500 in loss to Cows
Written by Nicholas Huenefeld

7/7/10 Delaware, OH---
Full Box Score

The Lake Erie Monarchs just can’t seem to get over the hump as they fell to the Delaware Cows tonight 6-4.

The loss drops the Monarchs to 12-12-1 overall and 11-11-1 in the Great Lakes League. They have now rotated wins and losses in each of the last seven games.

Lake Erie starter Mike McKinley (Indiana) gave up two runs in the first inning after hitting a batter, giving up a walk, and a two RBI double to left field by Matt Streng. Streng, the cleanup hitter for the Cows, went 3-4 with a run and two RBIs for the game.

McKinley (2-1), who took the loss, lasted two innings before Joey McClung (Middle Tennessee State) relieved him. McClung pitched a scoreless third before allowing an RBI groundout to Evan Frazar in the fourth.

The Monarchs scored two runs of their own in the fifth inning. Jack Scanlon (Western Michigan) singled on a bunt to leadoff. He then stole second base before moving to third on a single by Sam Russell (Central Michigan).

Russell moved to second and Scanlon scored on a wild pitch with Reid Rooney (Central Michigan) at bat. Rooney then singled to right field and advanced Russell to third with no outs. A.J. DeMarco (Toledo) then dropped a sacrifice bunt to advance Rooney to second before Elliot Searer (Penn State) hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Russell.

The rally ended when Seth Willoughby (Xavier) flew out to right.

Tyler Scott (Toledo) then gave those two runs back in the sixth. He departed only one out into the inning after giving up five hits and one walk in 1.1 innings.

Jeff Kelly (Pittsburgh) followed him with 1.2 innings of two hit and one run ball.

The Monarchs mounted one last rally in the eighth inning. Searer singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Willoughby then walked putting runners on first and second.

Ryan Ford (Middle Tennessee State) then singled to right field – loading the bases. Chris Savas (Central Michigan) then pinch hit for Alex Johnson (Cleveland State), who had struck out in his previous three at bats. However, Savas then hit into a 6-4-3 double play.

Searer scored on the play to put the Monarchs down 6-3. Kurt Farmer (Nebraska) then singled to score Willoughby and cut the lead to two. Farmer then stole second and advanced to third on a balk before Scanlon grounded out to second base to end the inning.

Josh Cok (Central Michigan) pitched the eighth inning and retired the Cows 1-2-3 for the only time in the game. The Cows had 16 runners reach base.

Victor Roache and Ben Jurevicius had two hits apiece for Delaware. On the mound, Kevin Schindler (2-1) got the win after starting for the Cows. He went five innings and allowed four hits and two runs while striking out four.

Every Monarch starter had a hit tonight besides DeMarco and Johnson for a total of seven hits, while no Monarch had two or more hits.

Delaware left six men on base to Lake Erie’s four and Lake Erie struck out eight times to Delaware’s six. Each team hit into two double plays.

Scanlon is now 4-4 on stolen bases, while Farmer is 3-4 for the season.

The Monarchs next game is on Friday at 7:30 p.m. vs the Southern Ohio Copperheads at Ohio University. It will be a three game series that concludes on Sunday.
