Monarchs Split In Newark PDF Print E-mail
Written by Ian Kenyon

In the last doubleheader of the season for Lake Erie, the Monarchs split with the Settlers winning the first game 5-3 before falling 6-3 in game two. The Monarchs are now 12-23 on the season with only one game remaining.

In game one, Licking County took a 2-0 lead going into the fourth, but saw that fade away after a 3 run fourth by the Monarchs. The 3 runs were scored on 3 consecutive hits followed by 2 wild pitches to score all 3 players. The Settlers tied the game up in the fifth on a sacrifice bunt. However, Lake Erie wouldn’t give up, scoring two more runs in the sixth, to give them the 5-3 victory. Kolbrin Vitek and Matt Dittman scored the 2 runs on a fielder’s choice that resulted in an error, so both players were allowed to score. Vitek was 3-4 with 2 runs scored and Dittman impressed as well going 2-4 with 2 runs scored. The Monarchs were the benefit of some bad defense from the Settlers, who committed 3 errors and allowed 4 unearned runs.

Charlie Fisher started his first game for the Lake Erie after being called up from the Michigan Monarchs, tossing a complete game where he allowed 3 runs on 8 hits and 3 walks, earning himself the victory.

In game two, the Monarchs held a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the fifth, but the wheels fell off the wagon from there. Licking County scored in 3 of the next 4 innings, including a 3 run sixth inning to give the Settlers a 6-2 lead going into the ninth. The Monarchs were able to add one run in the top of the ninth on a Matt Dittman triple that drove in Kolbrin Vitek who got on with a single earlier in the inning. Vitek led the team with 2 hits and 2 runs scored. Dallas Burke went 1-3 with an RBI.

Cody McPherson threw for the Monarchs, throwing 5 2/3 innings, allowing 5 runs on 8 hits and 1 walk. Ryan Domschot threw 1 1/3 innings of shutout baseball, retiring all 4 batters he faced. Dan Gatins closed the game out, throwing the final inning and allowing 1 run on 1 hit. McPherson earned the loss for his first decision on the year.
