BOWLING GREEN—The Lake Erie Monarchs, at the invitation of the Alaska Goldpanners will take part in the 104th playing of the Midnight Sun this June in Fairbanks, Alaska. The game is played on June 21st, the date of the summer solstice.

Baseball America has identified the Midnight Sun Game, as well as a Red Sox-Yankees showdown at Boston’s Fenway Park and the College World Series in Omaha, as one of its 12 ‘’must-see'’ events.

The game has been called a baseball happening like no other, a baseball game played 160 miles south of the Arctic Circle beginning at 10:30 in the evening at Growden Memorial Stadium. The solstice provides 22 hours of daylight and offers the opportunity for the game to be played past midnight and into the next day without the benefit of any artificial lighting.

The Monarchs are no strangers to Alaska having traveled to there in 2004 and 2006, playing 12 game tours of the Alaska Baseball League each time.  “To be able to represent the Great Lakes League and the Great Lakes region in the Midnight Sun game is one of the greatest opportunities our organization will have ever taken part in,” stated Jim DeSana, the Monarchs General Manager. “Alaska is the most awe inspiring State in America and we are very thankful to the Goldpanners and the Alaska Baseball League for this great opportunity to take part in such a historic event,” said DeSana.

In addition to the Midnight Sun game, the Monarchs will be crisscrossing  Alaska and playing 11 more games against the Goldpanners, the Anchorage Bucs, the Kenai Oilers, the Anchorage Glacier Pilots and the Matsu Miners.
